One of the oldest varieties cultivated in Japan, generally in arbors/pergolas, most often used as a table grape and recently vinified and associated with other varieties. It is a Vitis vinifera also known in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the United States... practically unknown in France.

The most common is that in 718 AD, a Buddhist monk named Gyoki planted the first vineyards at Daizenji Temple, near Katsunuma (southwest of Tokyo).

St-Joseph 2021: report and top-scoring wines
Clément Bärtschi, winemaker and cellarmaster at M Chapoutier, saw little frost in St-Joseph in 2021. Nevertheless, the cool, wet season resulted in oscillating quality.
