The Mas Amiel Estate, located at the gates of Languedoc-Roussillon in France, is one of the oldest vineyards in Europe. Founded in Maury in 1510 by the Templars under the reign of Louis XII, the Estate is now owned by the Cohen family and specializes in red wine. The vineyard is particularly rich in varied soils, giving the property a diversity of tasting. The range of terroirs that make up the Estate gives birth to wines whose fragrances recall the oaks and pine forests of the surrounding areas. The Estate is renowned for producing intense and velvety red wines, rich in aromas and depth. Since its creation, the Estate has always been worked with the utmost respect for its terroir and environmental practices. The vines are manually maintained, which allows preserving the biological balance of the soils. The red wines of the Mas Amiel Estate are made from hand-picking of the oldest vines, located at more than 800 meters altitude: these are barreled very early, which allows them to conserve all their richness and character. Thanks to a serious bottling and vinification work, the Mas Amiel Estate thus offers unique and memorable red wines. The Estate also produces a very appreciated sweet white wine, as well as a typical, delicious and fruity rose wine. For more than 500 years, the Mas Amiel Estate has been an ode to viticultural excellence and one of the main reference points of the French wine landscape. Traditional grape varieties, respect for the land, and entirely manual winemaking make the Mas Amiel Estate a unique and essential vineyard.

Discovering the wine region of Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc (formerly Coteaux du Languedoc) is a key appellation used in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region of southern France. It covers Dry table wines of all three colors (red, white and rosé) from the entire region, but leaves Sweet and Sparkling wines to other more specialized appellations. About 75% of all Languedoc wines are red, with the remaining 25% split roughly down the middle between whites and rosés. The appellation covers most of the Languedoc region and almost a third of all the vineyards in France.

The typical Languedoc red wine is medium-bodied and Fruity. The best examples are slightly heavier and have darker, more savoury aromas, with notes of spice, undergrowth and leather. The Grape varieties used to make them are the classic southern French ones: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, often with a touch of Carignan or Cinsaut. The white wines of the appellation are made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc, with occasional use of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from the Rhône Valley.

Discover the grape variety: Vermentino

The vermentino grape variety was widespread in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Today, Vermentino is grown in the regions bordering the Mediterranean, mainly in Provence (Côtes de Provence, Bellet), Corsica (Corse Calvi), Languedoc (Côtes du Roussillon, Costières de Nîmes) and the Rhône Valley (Côtes du Luberon). Because it ripens late, Vermentino requires a warm climate for its development and can only be grown in regions with good sun exposure. Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentino is only susceptible to powdery mildew. When vinified on its own, Vermentino produces a single-variety dry white wine that is light and full-bodied with a pale yellow color. It can also be blended with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache, in which case its low acidity makes it light and fresh. Vermentino belongs to the grape varieties of Ajaccio, Corsica and Corbières. The aromas released by this variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear and fresh pineapple.
