Please allow me to correct you. The Meyer-Näkel Estate is actually located in the Ahr region of Germany, not in South Africa. I offer you a description of this German winery. The Meyer-Näkel vineyard is a renowned family estate, nestled in the picturesque Ahr Valley in the northwest of Germany. The Ahr region is particularly appreciated for its unique microclimate that provides optimal conditions for vine growing. The Meyer-Näkel family has a long tradition in viticulture and has been operating this estate since 1950. Since then, they have been producing high-quality wines in accordance with the principles of sustainable viticulture, resulting in modern wines with expressive aromas that are appreciated by wine lovers worldwide. The vineyard extends over an area of 18 hectares, most of which is planted with Pinot Noir, a grape variety that is particularly difficult to cultivate but which, in the expert hands of the Meyer-Näkel family, produces elegant, complex, and highly concentrated wines. The philosophy of the estate is centered on respect for the environment and the preservation of the terroir. The vines are cultivated using biodynamic methods, without pesticides or herbicides, in harmony with natural cycles. The love of wine and the family tradition are the driving forces behind the success of the Meyer-Näkel estate. Since 1982, the estate has been managed by Werner Näkel, an eminent personality in the German wine world, named "Winzer des Jahres" (winemaker of the year) in 1994 and 2004. The Meyer-Näkel Estate produces red, white and rosé wines, each being a true expression of the Ahr terroir.

Discovering the wine region of Ahr

Ahr is one of Germany’s least-known and Northernmost wine regions, known for its Pinot Noir reds. It Lies immediately north of the Mosel, and follows the Ahr River in the Final stages of its journey towards its confluence with the Rhein. One might expect a wine region this far north (50°N) to specialize in white wines – like almost every other cool-Climate wine region. After all, neighboring Mosel and Mittelrhein both clearly favor white wines (around 85 percent).

However Ahr producing around 85 percent red wines, of which around three-quarters are made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The classic example is brick red in Color and smells of red cherries, Sweetspices and forest floor. Barrel-aging can add spice and savory notes. Ahr Pinot Noir is now a much more Serious, modern and "international" wine style that it once was.

Until 30 years ago, the wines were often slightly sweet and very pale. Today they are invariably Dry and deeper in color – although still much paler than the inky Pinots found in, say, Central Otago. Across Germany (most obviously in Pfalz and Baden), assisted by climate change, the popularity of Pinot Noir has been steadily increasing. The wave of interest has carried German Spätburgunder to new heights, and saved from near-extinction the earlier-ripening Pinot Noir clone, Fruhburgunder.
