The United States has confidently come of age as one of the world's leading wine-producing nations. Their reputation may be based on the world-famous Napa and Sonoma, but the U. S. states produce wine to some degree, although 95 percent of it comes from just four of them. California is by far the most prolific, producing five times the combined total of the next three: Washington, Oregon and New York. The 5% that comes from the other states, led by Texas and Virginia, is produced largely for local consumption rather than for domestic or international markets.
The word of the wine: Phylloxera
Aphid that came from America and ravaged European vineyards at the end of the 19th century. It lives on the roots of the vine, from which it pumps the sap. The only vines capable of resisting it had to be imported from the United States, and then grafted onto their root system the wood of traditional French grape varieties. Today, grafted vines are always planted.
