The Maison Ventenac is a wine estate located in the picturesque region of Languedoc-Roussillon, in France. Deeply rooted in the winemaking history of this region, Maison Ventenac was born at the foot of the Black Mountain and flourished in the legendary land of the Cathars. The estate spreads over about 160 hectares of vineyards, nestled in a natural amphitheater that exposes the vines to optimal sunshine while protecting them from bad weather. This specific microclimate, combined with clay-limestone soils, allows for the production of characterful wines, marked by their terroir of origin and offering a true gustatory imprint. Maison Ventenac's vineyard is a real patchwork of grape varieties, where the traditional Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah rub shoulders with the rarer Riesling or Chenin. This diversity allows a wide range of wines to be crafted, reflecting the full richness of the Languedoc-Roussillon. They produce a variety of both traditional and innovative crus, breathing new life into the region's wines. Maison Ventenac is also an example of sustainable viticulture. Respect for the land is deeply ingrained in the house's philosophy, which reflects in their commitment to reasoned viticulture. They use traditional methods, such as hand harvesting and aging in oak barrels, but they also incorporate modern winemaking techniques to maintain a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Maison Ventenac offers more than just a wine tasting. It provides a real experience in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon, where visitors can stroll through the vineyards, visit traditional cellars, and learn all about the art of winemaking.

Discovering the wine region of Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc (formerly Coteaux du Languedoc) is a key appellation used in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region of southern France. It covers Dry table wines of all three colors (red, white and rosé) from the entire region, but leaves Sweet and Sparkling wines to other more specialized appellations. About 75% of all Languedoc wines are red, with the remaining 25% split roughly down the middle between whites and rosés. The appellation covers most of the Languedoc region and almost a third of all the vineyards in France.

The typical Languedoc red wine is medium-bodied and Fruity. The best examples are slightly heavier and have darker, more savoury aromas, with notes of spice, undergrowth and leather. The Grape varieties used to make them are the classic southern French ones: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, often with a touch of Carignan or Cinsaut. The white wines of the appellation are made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc, with occasional use of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from the Rhône Valley.

Discover the grape variety: Vermentino

The vermentino grape variety was widespread in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Today, Vermentino is grown in the regions bordering the Mediterranean, mainly in Provence (Côtes de Provence, Bellet), Corsica (Corse Calvi), Languedoc (Côtes du Roussillon, Costières de Nîmes) and the Rhône Valley (Côtes du Luberon). Because it ripens late, Vermentino requires a warm climate for its development and can only be grown in regions with good sun exposure. Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentino is only susceptible to powdery mildew. When vinified on its own, Vermentino produces a single-variety dry white wine that is light and full-bodied with a pale yellow color. It can also be blended with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache, in which case its low acidity makes it light and fresh. Vermentino belongs to the grape varieties of Ajaccio, Corsica and Corbières. The aromas released by this variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear and fresh pineapple.
