Pierrevert (formerly known as Coteaux de Pierrevert) is an appellation in Provence. It applies to red, white and rosé wines. Grenache and Syrah are the dominant grape varieties used in Pierrevert red and rosé wines, complemented by Carignan and Cinsaut. The white wines are made from a balanced blend of Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne.
Interestingly, the appellation laws also allow for a small addition of Vermentino. Best known for its role in the white wines of Italy, it has recently been adopted by the wine producers of southern France. The vineyards are located in 11 parishes, including Pierrevert. Marsanne is a white grape variety that originated in Montélimar in the Drôme, several centuries ago. Marsanne is also found in Cassis, Savoie, Languedoc-Roussillon and Saint-Péray in the Ardèche, where it produces remarkable sparkling wines.
