Austere, noble reds, pale in colour and quick to turn garnet, with powerful tannins and high acidity, showing aromas of sour cherry, faded rose, tar, white truffle, leather and balsamic notes with age. Outstanding ageing potential. Absolute star of Piedmont with Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, also in Roero, Gattinara, Ghemme and Valtellina (Chiavennasca). Discreet DOC of the Alto Piemonte (Biella, ~25 ha) on unique soils of acidic marine sands rich in minerals over limestone, sheltered by Monte Rosa. Local Nebbiolo Spanna (>=85 %) is the signature red: pale garnet, elegant and linear with intense rose, violet, red cherry, raspberry, liquorice and a superb saline-mineral touch, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Vespolina and Uva Rara as complements. 22 months ageing, 12 in wood.
