Austere, noble reds, pale in colour and quick to turn garnet, with powerful tannins and high acidity, showing aromas of sour cherry, faded rose, tar, white truffle, leather and balsamic notes with age. Outstanding ageing potential. Absolute star of Piedmont with Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, also in Roero, Gattinara, Ghemme and Valtellina (Chiavennasca). A late-ripening Italian variety among the world's greatest.
Confidential DOC of the Alto Piemonte (Novara, Fara Novarese and Briona), clay soils at 180–330 m on the east slope of the Sesia valley. Nebbiolo (Spanna, 50–70%) as signature elegant red — lively notes of violet, rose, red cherry, raspberry, spices and a mineral-liquorice touch, silky tannins and racy acidity, more approachable young than Gattinara. Uva Rara (Bonarda Novarese) and Vespolina as structural complements. Ageing ≥22 months.
