Ukraine is a large country in Eastern Europe (the second largest on the European continent, after Russia) bordering Poland to the west, Russia to the east and the Black Sea to the South.
By 2014, the Ukrainian wine industry had become a major player in Eastern Europe. But that year, Crimea came under the control of Russia. There are several small wine regions in the country, which contribute to the production.
However, Crimea was (is) by far the largest, with the best conditions.
Two famous wineries from the Tsarist era, Massandra and Noviy Svet, were seized in 2014, nationalized by Russia, and then heavily subsidized. Overall, wine producers gained easier access to the Russian market, but have since faced export bans to other countries due to sanctions against Russia.
Crimea has a Long history of wine production, and during the Soviet era it was a Center of mass wine production distributed throughout the USSR.
However, the total area of vineyards was cut in half as Part of Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign against Alcohol abuse.
The sylvaner is grown mainly in Germany and Alsace. The buds are somewhat cottony and the young leaves are green. The same applies to the ribbed branches. Once mature, the dominant colour is golden-green and small elliptical berries with small to medium-sized bunches can be seen. The ripe fruit is then adorned by five-lobed leaves. This variety is susceptible to chlorosis, gray mold, powdery mildew and mildew. It is also sensitive to frost and wind because of its long branches. It can be grown in any kind of soil, although it prefers stony, sandy and light soils. It is indeed moderately acidic and offers a complex set of aromas such as bitter almond, fruity and floral background. The taste has an excellent mixture of honey and candied or dried fruits.
white wines from the region of Ukraine go well with generally quite well with dishes of pork, rich fish (salmon, tuna etc) or vegetarian such as recipes of braised (green) cabbage, endives with smoked salmon au gratin or quiche lorraine.
On the nose in the region of Ukraine often reveals types of flavors of earth, vegetal or tree fruit and sometimes also flavors of citrus fruit, tropical fruit or non oak.
