The Rolly Gassmann Estate is located in the small rural village of Obernai, in Alsace, about 15 minutes by car from Strasbourg. Their 12 hectares of vineyards are situated on slopes that bring necessary rain and humidity for the vines, but also a beautiful exposure to the sun which makes it an ideal location for wine cultivation. The soil, composed mainly of granite, shale and marl, form a rich and diverse terroir, offering optimal quality for the vines. The vineyards of the Rolly Gassmann Estate are cultivated biodynamically which allows for the health and vigor of the vines. Great care is taken at every step of the winemaking process to ensure the best quality possible. The process begins with the selection of varieties suited to each grape variety and each plot. Once the vine is ready, the grapes are hand-picked, ensuring that only the best grains are selected for production. Once the grapes are harvested, the winemaking is mastered throughout the process. The wines are then bottled and stored in their wine cellar so that they can age. Rolly Gassmann offers a wide range of red, white and rosé wines, including Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Rolly Gassmann Estate is always in pursuit of excellence and for this reason it is recognized as one of the leading producers of biodynamic wines in Alsace. Over the years, the vineyard has been highly successful and has become a popular place to visit for wine lovers. This estate is an example that producers can produce quality organic wines while respecting nature.

Discovering the wine region of Alsace

Alsace, located in the extreme north-east of France, is Distinguished from other French wine regions by its strong Franco-Germanic influences. These influences are the result of a back-and-forth between the German and French sovereignties over the last few centuries. They can be seen not only in the architecture and culture of Alsace, but also in the wines. Alsace wines are produced under three main appellations: Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru for still white wines (Sweet and Dry), and Crémant d'Alsace for Sparkling wines.

Almost all the wines produced in this region fall under one of these three appellations. Alsace Grand Cru wines are produced from one of the 51 privileged vineyards spread along the Length of the region. Alsace is the only French wine region to produce significant quantities of Riesling and Gewurztraminer. These two grape varieties are more commonly associated with German wines and are reminiscent of Alsace's history.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot gris

Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot gris was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. Pinot Gris is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot Gris wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot gris is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.

This variety is susceptible to chlorosis, gray mold, powdery mildew and mildew. It is also sensitive to frost and wind because of its long branches. It can be grown in any kind of soil, although it prefers stony, sandy and light soils. It is indeed moderately acidic and offers a complex set of aromas such as bitter almond, fruity and floral background. The taste has an excellent mixture of honey and candied or dried fruits.
