Roche de Bellene House is located in the renowned wine-growing region of Burgundy in France. Known for its particularly tasty and award-winning wines and cheeses (its region produces the famous best cheese in France), the house is committed to and passionate about the art of cultivating wine, while respecting a very rich and autonomous soil that is certified organic. This dedicated family, at the helm of the house for many years, is committed to training new generations of winemakers and transmitting its know-how and passion. Roche de Bellene was founded in 1735 and is located at the heart of the wild and wooded hills of the region. The house is named after Roger Bellene, a pioneer of Burgundy wines, and its lineage is one of the oldest families in the region. From the beginning, they boldly cultivated the land from which technically and naturally, the house's famous wines originate. The Bacons, auxiliaries of the vines for over 60 years, have implemented a very sophisticated and highly motorized cultivation method in the estate. Roche de Bellene's approach focuses on quality rather than quantity. Their vineyard is composed of sustainable white and red grape varieties, which are very peaceful and of high quality. Their philosophy and expertise in vine growing is reflected in the character, complexity, and freshness of the wines produced from the vineyards. The symbols of the house are birds, as the vines orchestrate the symphony of birds and vineyards every year. At Roche de Bellene estate, they carry out environmentally friendly farming and practice healthy and rational wine-making using modern equipment to vinify exceptional vintages. With decades of success behind it and generations of wine enthusiasts committed to producing exceptional vintages, Roche de Bellene House remains synonymous with quality, and always aspires to cultivate the best version of their wines.

Discovering the wine region of Burgundy

Bourgogne is the catch-all regional appellation title of the Burgundy wine region in eastern France ("Bourgogne" is the French name for Burgundy). Burgundy has a Complex and comprehensive appellation system; counting Premier Cru and Grand Cru titles, the region has over 700 appellation titles for its wines. Thus, Burgundy wines often come from one Vineyard (or several separate vineyards) without an appellation title specific to the region, Village or even vineyard. A standard Burgundy wine may be made from grapes grown in one or more of Burgundy's 300 communes.

Unlike Burgundy's village appellations, which specialize in red or white wines or a combination of both, Burgundy covers red, white and rosé wines, and even Sparkling wines as in the case of Crémant de Bourgogne and Bourgogne Mousseux. Each Burgundy appellation may be followed by the Color of the wine (white, red or rosé), as appropriate, and if not already implied by the appellation itself. Red Burgundy is produced almost exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes and is Distinguished from White Burgundy, which is produced from white grapes (mainly Chardonnay). A key difference between Burgundy wines and those produced under the Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations is that the grape variety used in the wine can be indicated on the label.

This has contributed to the perception and marketing of Burgundy wines in foreign markets, where a Burgundy Pinot Noir or a Burgundy Chardonnay is much easier to sell. To accommodate the different styles of wine produced in Burgundy, there are six key Burgundy appellations: Burgundy itself, Burgundy Aligoté (limited to the named white grape variety with other regulations distinguishing it from the generic regional appellation), "Bourgogne Mousseux", "Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire", Bourgogne Passe-tout and Crémant de Bourgogne. There are even two appellations dedicated to the region's brandies: Eau-de-vie de Vin de Bourgogne and Eau-de-vie de Marc de Bourgogne. Some of the above appellations may be suffixed with the name of the sub-region, village or vineyard where the grapes were grown.

Discover the grape variety: Gamay noir

Gamay is a Burgundian grape variety that has existed since the 14th century. For fear of competition with the pinot noir of Burgundy, gamay was finally uprooted and planted in the Beaujolais region, from Mâcon to Lyon. These siliceous and granitic soils suit it perfectly, and it gives its best here. But it is also planted all over France, such as in Lorraine, in the Loire Valley, in Bugey, in Savoie and in Auvergne. Gamay is early and very productive and needs to be limited so that quality prevails over quantity. Short winter pruning of the shoots and high density of vines per hectare are the methods that allow it to produce very fruity, fresh and greedy red wines. Gamay is also very popular in red wine futures, and produces wines from the Beaujolais region with very interesting character and ageing potential. The AOCs Crémant-de-Bourgogne, Mâcon, Anjou, Touraine, Rosé de vallée de la Loire, Côtes-d'Auvergne, Saint-Pourçain, Bugey, Gaillac, Côtes du Luberon... and many vins de pays are proud of it. Today, about 36,000 hectares of Gamay are cultivated in France, including 22,000 hectares in Beaujolais.
