The Domaine de la Bégude is located in Bandol, on the Mediterranean coast of France. It houses a historical winemaking site that spans a total area of about 22 hectares. The site has a long history, dating back to 1820, and today consists of 14 hectares of mature AOC Bandol vineyards, with a subsoil composed of limestone clays. The Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre are at the heart of la Bégude's production, characterizing the Bandol terroir. The AOC Bandol is famous for its powerful reds with soft and silky tannins, the white wines being incredibly fresh and fruity, with citrus notes and remarkable acidity. The winemakers use winemaking methods that respect and promote the environment, favoring biodiversity and being mindful of minimal chemical usage, and recycling the fermentation and wine production products. The wines are aged 100% in new barrels and in stainless steel tanks depending on the grape varieties and selections. Organic practices are also implemented, and as a member of the Bandol AOP Collective, the domain supports collective projects for sustainable viticulture and interaction with nature and local rituals. The wines, ranging from a very aromatic dry rosé to a mature and intense red wine, are available in bottle and online and are very appreciated by wine enthusiasts all over Europe. La Bégude also offers tours and courses about the domains that highlight their history and winemaking philosophy, their hospitality style and their incomparable wines.

Discovering the wine region of Bandol

Bandol is a key appellation in the wine region of Provence, in the far southeast of France. Created in 1941, the appellation covers red, white and rosé wines from approximately 1,550 hectares of vineyards located around the coastal town of Bandol on the Mediterranean coast. These are spread unevenly over eight communes in the Var dePartment, the majority being located just North of Bandol, in Le Beausset, La Cadière-d'Azur, Le Castellet and Évenos. Bandol is best known for its red wines, which constitute the majority of the appellation's production.

These contain a high proportion of Mourvèdre - the appellation rules require at least 50%. Using this amount of such a Spicy and Powerful grape makes for a wine with Character that is difficult to produce in any other part of France. Mourvèdre will only ripen reliably in a Climate as sunny and Warm as that which prevails along the Mediterranean coast. Grenache is the other main component of Bandol's red (and rosé) wines.
