The Ballot Millot Estate, located in Meursault, France, is a vineyard renowned for its subtle, complex, and terroir-fruity white wines. The estate is run by Pierre-Yves, son and successor of Jean-Charles Ballot, who was a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture. Since Pierre-Yves and his wife Laurence took over the estate in 2002, the quality of the wines has reached new heights and the estate has climbed to the very top echelon of Meursault wines. The estate's vineyards stretch over 17 hectares, distributed on clay-limestone soils and on plots sown with white marl and small stones. The estate exclusively cultivates chardonnays, with seven out of the ten distinct climates classified under their own label. Eight main grape varieties are grown in the vineyards: the old vines are the most valuable and dominate production. The estate produces six white wines: Meursault, Meursault-Genevrières, Meursault Perrières, Meursault Les Grands Charrons, Meursault les Vireuils and Meursault Les Tessons. Each of these wines has its own identity and character style, reflecting the characteristics of the terroir. Yields are very limited, around 40-44 hl/ha, making it a very environmentally respectful producer. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, depending on the cuvées, before being bottled. Some of the wines are also refined in the bottle for 6 to 18 months before being put on the market. It is during this process that the wines evolve before becoming subtle and balanced wines, while retaining their freshness and unique character. The estate is not only a top-tier producer, but it is also a source of constant innovation: the estate has committed to holistic environmental practices, such as the use of natural and environmentally friendly pesticides.
