Managing and marketing such a vast portfolio of wines is not an easy task, especially in today's highly competitive wine market. The Italian government's wine classification and labeling system uses a four-level quality hierarchy of over 500 DOCG, DOC and IGT titles.

Italy is divided into 20 administrative regions (see left), all of which produce wine to some degree, and all of which contain various wine regions. The most important, in terms of quality and quantity, are Tuscany, Piedmont and Veneto.
Each region has its flagship wine styles.
The word of the wine: Water stress
Lack of water. Water stress blocks the vegetative cycle of the vine, which uses all available resources to maintain the integrity of the plant, thus blocking the ripening process of the grapes.

European Parliament rejects health warnings on wine labels
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Strasbourg have backed amendments to a range of recommendations put forward by the Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA), which included a proposal for health warnings on wine and drinks labels.
