The Berne Castle, classified as "Great Wines of Provence", is located to the west of Côtes de Provence, surrounded by 445 hectares of vineyards. With a long, rich history in tradition, it is one of the oldest wine estates in the region. From the base of the entire vineyard, close to 800 pear trees, the vineyard houses 22 different grape varieties for the production of dry, rosé, white and ancestral method wines. Progressive viticultural processes using modern innovative tools are applied to the vines to maximize the value of the terroir and the potential of the wine. This interface between tradition and modernity is also reflected in their responsible operating system. The Berne Castle also houses three different settings, including the historical estate, which offers a total immersion in the historical lands. A visit to the "halls of wonders" will make you admire the stones and objects that adorn the castle. A portion of the castle is designed to feel as if you are on a vacation, offering many stays for those who come from afar. Then there is a contemporary touch, with large outdoor spaces, gastronomic services and events to discover all aspects of the castle. Every year, various activities are organized during the summer months: parties, markets, music festivals, wine tasting sessions, wine tastings and local product tastings. Thus, Berne Castle has become a family and social destination that combines viticultural and gastronomic excellence in a bucolic setting. All those who visit the wine estate are sure to have a wonderful stay and experience a delightful experience.

Discovering the wine region of Côtes de Provence

The AOC Côtes de Provence is the largest appellation in the Provence wine region of southeastern France. It covers about 20,000 hectares of vineyards, which produce the vast majority of Provence's rosé wine. This appellation includes most of the vineyards in the Var department - essentially the eastern half of the Provence wine region - with the exception of 2,250 hectares North of Toulon which are reserved for the Côteaux Varois en Provence appellation. Although it also covers red and white wine, about 80% of Côtes de Provence production is rosé.

This wine is mainly made from the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut grapes, as well as the quintessential Provence red Tibouren. Although clearly a minority, the Volume of red wine produced under this title (and elsewhere in Provence) is increasing and currently represents about 15% of the total. Grapes such as the three key Rhone varieties mentioned above and Cabernet Sauvignon (introduced here in the 1960s) are being used by a New wave of winemakers eager to demonstrate that rosé is not the only interesting wine in the region. Only about five percent of Côtes de Provence wines are made from white grapes, particularly Rolle (Vermentino).

Discover the grape variety: Vermentino

The vermentino grape variety was widespread in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Today, Vermentino is grown in the regions bordering the Mediterranean, mainly in Provence (Côtes de Provence, Bellet), Corsica (Corse Calvi), Languedoc (Côtes du Roussillon, Costières de Nîmes) and the Rhône Valley (Côtes du Luberon). Because it ripens late, Vermentino requires a warm climate for its development and can only be grown in regions with good sun exposure. Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentino is only susceptible to powdery mildew. When vinified on its own, Vermentino produces a single-variety dry white wine that is light and full-bodied with a pale yellow color. It can also be blended with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache, in which case its low acidity makes it light and fresh. Vermentino belongs to the grape varieties of Ajaccio, Corsica and Corbières. The aromas released by this variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear and fresh pineapple.
