Located in the prosperous and picturesque region of Puglia, in the southeast of Italy, the Tagaro Estate is renowned for its production of high-quality wines, marked by local authenticity and respect for Italian winemaking tradition. Characterized by a breathtaking landscape, bathed by the generosity of the Mediterranean sun, the estate spreads over several hectares of fertile land, ideal for vine cultivation. The vines are planted in predominantly limestone soils, providing optimum conditions for their growth and maturation. Thus, the estate is capable of producing an impressive variety of wines, ranging from robust reds to light and delicate whites. The Tagaro Estate takes pride in its rich and historic heritage. Founded at the beginning of the 20th century, the estate has remained in the same family for four generations. This family tradition reinforces the estate's commitment to viticultural excellence, while maintaining a modern approach to winemaking, notably through sustainable viticulture practices. Among the grape varieties cultivated on the estate, Primitivo and Negroamaro are the most emblematic, each bringing distinctive characteristics to their respective wines. Primitivo is renowned for its tannic richness and aromatic complexity, while Negroamaro is appreciated for its velvety texture and notes of ripe fruit. In the estate, as much attention is given to the product as to the process. The grapes are handpicked, so as to respect nature and guarantee the quality of the wine. After the harvest, the wine is aged in oak barrels, providing each vintage with the time to develop its character and complexity. Visiting the Tagaro Estate is to experience authenticity in the heart of Italian viticulture.

Discovering the wine region of Puglia

Puglia (Apulia to many English speakers) is a Long, slender wine region in the extreme Southeast corner of Italy's "boot". To use the shoe analogy often used to illustrate the shape of Italy, Apulia extends from the tip of the heel to the mid-calf, where the spur of the Gargano Peninsula juts out into the Adriatic Sea. The heel (the Salento peninsula) occupies the southern half of the region and is of great importance for the identity of Puglia. Not only are there cultural and geographical differences from Northern Puglia, but the wines are also different.

While the north is slightly more hilly and more linked to the wine-making customs and practices of Central Italy, the south is almost entirely flat and retains a strong link to its Greco-Roman past. The only factor that unites northern and southern Puglia is the choice of crops: olives and grapes, in that order. The region is responsible for almost half of Italy's total olive oil production and has long had a reputation as a prolific source of (mainly red) wine. This has had Serious economic consequences for Puglia's winemakers and for the reputation of the region's wines; when the world began to demand higher quality wines, the mass-produced blended wines in which Puglia specialized lost their value.

The word of the wine: Old vines

There are no specific regulations governing the term "vieilles vignes". After 20 to 25 years, the yields stabilize and tend to decrease, the vines are deeply rooted, and the grapes that come from them give richer, more concentrated, more sappy wines, expressing with more nuance the characteristics of their terroir. It is possible to find plots of vines that claim to be a century old.
