Discover the grape variety: Cabernet franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest red grape varieties in Bordeaux. The Libourne region is its terroir where it develops best. The terroirs of Saint-Emilion and Fronsac allow it to mature and develop its best range of aromas. It is also the majority in many blends. The very famous Château Cheval Blanc, for example, uses 60% Cabernet Franc. The wines produced with Cabernet Franc are medium in colour with fine tannins and subtle aromas of small red fruits and spices. When blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings complexity and a bouquet of aromas to the wine. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk quite quickly, but whose great vintages can be kept for a long time. It is an earlier grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means that it is planted as far north as the Loire Valley. In Anjou, it is also used to make sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is now used in some twenty countries in Europe and throughout the world.

The Macallan Horizon created in collaboration with Bentley Motors

The concept, developed by design teams from both companies, borrows ideas from the automotive world in its use of a horizontal, rather than vertical, bottle design, and in holding back some important information about the product to be released at a later date. Macallan master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell has already finalised the liquid for Horizon, following a visit to Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, but no details about the whisky, its price or its availability, will be released until earl ...

Andrew Jefford: ‘Telling stories about terroir will lead us astray’

A domaine’s long history hoists its inanimate wines into life; biography brings meaning to the simple sensual pleasure of tasting a grower’s efforts. It’s important, though, to know what we are doing when we tell stories. And to know what to tell them about. Winemakers take the messy chaos of natural processes and add discipline, giving shape and direction to produce a stable and enticing wine. This was never nature’s intent. The storyteller takes a messy chaos of random events, either imagined ...

Burgundy’s Charles Lachaux signs deal with Crurated club

The deal will see small-production wines of the Charles Lachaux négoce business offered exclusively to Crurated members, the new partners announced. Bottles will still be distributed separately to restaurants in several markets, they added. Lachaux is considered an exciting talent in a younger generation of Burgundy winemakers. Alongside overseeing viticultural changes at his family’s Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux in recent years, he launched his namesake micro-négoce business in 2018. From 25 July, th ...

The word of the wine: Fees

This wine is characterized by a pleasant nervousness and an overall sensation of freshness on the palate, reinforced by minerality, a note of bitterness, a hint of CO2, and of course an appropriate serving temperature.
