Since 1746, the estate has belonged to the Michel-Vals family, whose origins date back to the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. The estate spans forty-four hectares of vineyards and scrubland, with vines exposed to maximum sunshine and benefiting from a Mediterranean climate conducive to the production of exceptional wines. The vines are of Mediterranean grape varieties, and five varietals are mainly grown in the vineyards, namely Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. The vines are surrounded by olive trees, which are also an integral part of the estate's terroir. The Domaine Commanderie de la Bargemone is characterized by limited production of remarkable wines, as each wine is produced from the best clusters. Particular care is also taken in winemaking to ensure each wine is balanced and expressive. Three great wines are produced, including the Domaine de la Bargemone Rosé, the Commanderie de la Bargemone Rouge, and the Baron de la Bargemone Rouge. The Domaine de la Bargemone Rosé is light and fruity, distinguished by its intense and complex color. The Commanderie de la Bargemone Rouge is full-bodied and robust, highlighting Mediterranean flavors. As for the Baron de la Bargemone Rouge, it is intense and expressive with a sunny depth. The Domaine Commanderie de la Bargemone specializes in the production of remarkable wines, reflecting the terroir and meticulous work of the owners. The wines are not only flavorful but harmonize perfectly with Mediterranean dishes such as game, grilled meats, and seafood. Finally, the estate also offers events and tours to enrich the visitor's experience.

Discovering the wine region of Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence

Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence is one of the main French appellations in the Provence wine region, located in the extreme southeast of the country. It is the second largest appellation in the region, with about 4,000 hectares North and west of Aix-en-Provence - the town from which it takes its name. The area also bears the tiny title of AOCPalette. The Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation was first introduced as a VDQS in 1956, having been informally known as Côteaux du Roy René (René d'Anjou being a 15th century French king famous for his love of wine and the Vine).

Full AOC status was granted in December 1985. The wines of Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence are, in that order of importance, rosé, red and white wines. The rosés and reds are made from a Complex blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Counoise, with Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon making up to 30% of these blends. The white wine of the appellation is made from an equally complex hierarchy of grape varieties, both local and borrowed.

Discover the grape variety: Vermentino

The vermentino grape variety was widespread in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Today, Vermentino is grown in the regions bordering the Mediterranean, mainly in Provence (Côtes de Provence, Bellet), Corsica (Corse Calvi), Languedoc (Côtes du Roussillon, Costières de Nîmes) and the Rhône Valley (Côtes du Luberon). Because it ripens late, Vermentino requires a warm climate for its development and can only be grown in regions with good sun exposure. Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentino is only susceptible to powdery mildew. When vinified on its own, Vermentino produces a single-variety dry white wine that is light and full-bodied with a pale yellow color. It can also be blended with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache, in which case its low acidity makes it light and fresh. Vermentino belongs to the grape varieties of Ajaccio, Corsica and Corbières. The aromas released by this variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear and fresh pineapple.

Counoise is a black grape variety of Spanish origin. It is widely cultivated in the southern part of France. It is very similar to the aubun, with which it is often confused, and has a white cottony bud. Unlike the aubun, the leaves of this variety do not have teeth in the petiolar sinus. They are thick and large. Its bunches are medium-sized but its berries are large. It is advisable to prune it short so that it is productive. It matures in the second half of the year, but production depends on the vintage. This grape variety appreciates hillside terroirs, which are stony and warm. It fears grey rot without being sensitive to oidium and mildew. Counoise has two approved clones, 508 and 725. The wine obtained from Counoise is not very colourful. It is fine and fruity. Its aromas are diversified with notes of fruit, flowers and spices.
