The Giovanni Canonica Estate is a true hidden gem of the Langhe wine region in Italy. Situated in the picturesque town of Barbaresco, this winery is renowned for its production of high-quality red wines, particularly those made from the Nebbiolo grape. On a small area of about 5 hectares, this estate perpetuates the winemaking tradition with endless passion passed down from generation to generation for over 100 years. Gianni Canonica, the current owner and winemaker, took over the estate in 1995 and continued to produce wines traditionally while adopting a biodynamic philosophy to preserve the integrity of his vineyards and wine. The estate is located at an ideal elevation, 250-300 meters above sea level. Thanks to the organic-mineral composition of the soil and favorable sun exposure, it provides optimal conditions for the cultivation of Nebbiolo. Vines are grown without the use of chemicals and meticulous work is carried out in the vineyard to maintain the natural balance of the soils. Canonica's approach to winemaking is as natural as possible, with spontaneous fermentation from native yeasts and a long, gentle maceration. Maturing is done in medium-sized oak barrels, allowing the estate's wines to gradually evolve while preserving their fruity purity and earthy energy. Giovanni Canonica Estate is respected and appreciated not only for its precious historical and geographical heritage but especially for the authenticity and elegance of its wines. These are wines that tell the story of the terroir they come from and the passion and dedication of the family that brings them to life.

Discover the grape variety: Nebbiolo

A very old grape variety grown in the Italian Piedmont. It has a great resemblance with the Freisa, which also comes from the same Italian region. Among the various massal selections made in Italy, we find lampia, michet and rosé. It can be found in Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Mexico, the United States (California), Australia, etc. In France, it is practically unknown, perhaps because it is a delicate and demanding grape variety with, among other things, a fairly long phenological cycle.
