Located in the heart of Sicily in Italy, the Occhipinti Estate is a true viticultural gem rooted in traditional Italian ancestry. The natural beauty of the vineyard and the excellence of its wines have established the estate as a key player in the Sicilian wine industry. Each vineyard of the Occhipinti Estate is cultivated and maintained with care and passion. Stretching over more than 15 hectares, the estate is dotted with sunny hillsides and lush vines. The Sicilian terroir and climate, warm and dry with light breezes from the Mediterranean, create ideal conditions for organic and biodynamic viticulture that the estate fully embraces. The particularity of the soils, mixing volcanic earth and limestone, gives the wines of the estate a unique quality and character. The estate is in the hands of Arianna Occhipinti, a passionate winemaker committed to natural wine production. Arianna perfectly embodies the connection between old viticulture knowledge and modern winemaking approaches. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with as little intervention as possible, in order to preserve the integrity of the natural aromas and flavors and to convey in each bottle the truth of the Sicilian terroir. Indigenous grape varieties, in particular Frappato and Nero d'Avola, are preferred. The wines produced are mainly fruity and expressive reds, with a beautiful tannic structure. However, the estate also offers a white wine, a sweet, delicately fragrant and mineral wine. The Occhipinti Estate offers a true experience to wine lovers visiting its cellars.

Discovering the wine region of Sicily

Sicily is the Southernmost region of Italy, and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For over 2500 years, Sicily (Sicilia in Italian) has been an important centre of Mediterranean viticulture, although the reputation and style of its wines have changed considerably over time. The island was once best known for its Sweet muscatels (see Pantelleria), and later for its fortified Marsala. Today, many of its best-known wines are Dry table wines produced under the regional designation IGT Terre Siciliane, or Sicilia DOC (see below).

At its widest point, Sicily measures 280 kilometers (175 miles) from east to west, and about a third of that distance from North to south. Its roughly triangular shape earned the island the nickname Trinacria (the triangle) in the Middle Ages and is reflected in the triskelion (a three-pronged pattern) at the Center of the regional flag. With constant sunshine and moderate rainfall, Sicily's classic Mediterranean Climate is ideally suited to wine Grape production. The Warm, dry climate means that mould and rot are kept to a minimum, especially in well-ventilated areas that benefit from coastal breezes.
