Discovering the wine region of Nierstein

Nierstein is significant town and wine-growing region in Rheinhessen, Germany. It sits on the banks of the Rhine river between the cities of Mainz and Worms, and also lends its name to one of Rheinhessen's three Bereiche (wine districts). The town's viticultural area is the second-largest wine-growing Center in Rheinhessen, with 783 hectares (1935 acres) under Vine. Of these, the vast majority are white Grapes, with Riesling being the absolutely dominant grape variety.

The town of Nierstein Lies just Northwest of Oppenheim, within the Rheinterrasse wine-growing region, which encompasses a high concentration of esteemed Vineyards. Within Rheinterrasse, Nierstein composes the Southern end of the Roter Hang (Red Slope), a steep embankment along the Rhine from Nierstein north to Nackenheim, known for its iron-rich clay and sandstone soils, which have a reddish hue and considered prized Terroir, giving the Rieslings a distinctive MineralCharacter. As a result of the favorable growing conditions and generally high caliber of producers based in the area, the VDP has issued a number of vineyards in the area with the Grosse Lage classification including Brudersberg, Pettenthal, Glöck, Hipping, Oelberg and Orbel. Brudersberg is a single hectare (2.

5 acre) vineyard parcel, owned by Weingut Heyl zu Herrnsheim and planted entirely to Riesling. Immediately to the north lies Pettenthal, on an east-facing slope spanning almost 40 hha (99 acres) of the Rhine's banks. To the south of Brudersberg, but still north of the township, are Hipping and Oelberg. These vineyards mark the Roter Hang's slight shift away from the Rhine.
