The Bodega Garzón wine estate, located in Maldonado, Uruguay, is an exceptional vineyard spread over more than 500 hectares of lush land. Nestled in an idyllic landscape, Bodega Garzón is an iconic location for quality wine production, proudly upholding the Uruguayan wine heritage. What first stands out about Bodega Garzón is its exceptional location. Nestled between the Sierra de Carapé mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean, this vineyard benefits from a perfect microclimate for vine cultivation. The maritime winds cool the hectares of vine stalks, allowing the grapes to slowly perfect their maturity, creating exceptional wines with a unique aromatic palette. The estate is recognized for its emblematic grape varieties, Tannat and Albariño. The former is a typically Uruguayan grape variety. It is a robust and tannic red wine, characterized by its complexity and perfect balance. Albariño, on the other hand, is a white wine of Spanish origin that adapts remarkably well to the Uruguayan environment, revealing enticing aromas of white fruits and citrus. Bodega Garzón also stands out for its commitment to produce wines in a sustainable manner. The buildings on the estate respect the environment and the winemaking processes are certified biodynamic. The estate was in fact the first wine establishment outside of North America to receive the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The wine produced at Bodega Garzón has been awarded several international prizes.

The word of the wine: Maceration

Prolonged contact and exchange between the juice and the grape solids, especially the skin. Not to be confused with the time of fermentation, which follows maceration. The juice becomes loaded with colouring matter and tannins, and acquires aromas. For a rosé, the maceration is short so that the colour does not "rise" too much. For white wines too, a "pellicular maceration" can be practised, which allows the wine to acquire more fat.

Its bunches are either of normal size or larger. Its berries have a thin skin and are rounded. Its foliage has a swarthy appearance. This variety must be pruned long because it is vigorous. It likes sandy and gravelly soils. Tannat is often exposed to leafhoppers and mites. It is also somewhat susceptible to grey rot. It has 11 approved clones, including 474, 717 and 794. Once mature, this variety produces acidic, fruity, tannic, acidic and full-bodied wines. Various aromas emerge, notably tobacco, cinnamon and exotic wood. Tannat is rarely used alone.
