The RdV Estate is a viticultural jewel nestled in the heart of the picturesque Delaplane Valley in Virginia. Perched 800 feet above sea level and overlooking the fertile Fauquier Valley, this winery offers an artistic spectacle, where the vastness of the landscape rivals that of the wines that are crafted there. The history of the RdV Estate dates back to 2004 when Rutger de Vink, a wine enthusiast, relinquished a successful career in telecommunications to dedicate himself to viticulture. After touring the world-renowned vineyards, from Burgundy to Napa Valley, de Vink purchased a 100-acre property and began working the land, planting vineyards on the steep slopes of Blue Ridge Mountain. Always mindful of quality, de Vink sought the assistance of celebrated winemaker Eric Boissenot and viticulturist Jean-Philippe Roby to produce wines that rival Bordeaux varietals. RdV Estate produces three unique wines: "Rendezvous," a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, "Lost Mountain," a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, and "Friends and Family," a more accessible everyday cuvée. The only vineyard in Virginia dedicated exclusively to Bordeaux wines, the estate quickly earned well-deserved recognition and respect from the global wine community. Its premium location, with its granite soil and unique microclimate, contributes to creating complex and balanced wines, with a firm tannic structure and refreshing acidity.

Discovering the wine region of Virginia

Virginia is a state on the eastern seaboard of the United States, located immediately South of Maryland and North of the Carolinas. The state covers 42,750 square miles (110,750 km2) of mountains, valleys and the Atlantic coastal Complex that forms its eastern border. From the Cumberland and Blue Ridge Mountains in the west to the coastal creeks and estuaries in the east, Virginia's topography and geology are varied, to say the least. The landscape around the Chesapeake Bay - a vast coastal inlet that separates the main state from its Eastern Shore - could hardly be more different from that below Mt Rogers (1,750m), 480km to the west.

The Shenandoah Valley is the largest AVA in the country. It stretches for 240 km at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the natural boundary that separates Virginia from West Virginia. The Monticello AVA is the oldest, formed in February 1984 and located around Charlottesville in Central Virginia. It has the honor of being the home of Thomas Jefferson, his extensive French wine collection and the state's first winery.
