In the heart of the Nahe valley, in northeast Germany, lies an exceptional winery, the Dönnhoff Estate. Known for the exceptional quality of its wines, this estate stands out with its rich history and particularly valued ancestral know-how. The Dönnhoff Estate is situated on the picturesque banks of the Nahe, a sparkling and verdant wine region. The estate stretches over about 28 hectares, with vines rooted in diverse soils, ranging from alluvial rocky soils to slate soils, through volcanic porphyry soils. This great variety offers a complex range of wines that caters to a wide spectrum of taste profiles. At the helm of the estate, Helmut Dönnhoff is one of the most influential winemakers in Germany. He is considered the pioneer of Riesling wine in the region, having dedicated over 40 years to perfecting his winemaking technique. Mr. Dönnhoff's philosophy is to let the vines fully express themselves, intervening as little as possible during the winemaking process. He firmly believes that the best wines are those that capture the essence of the terroir on which the grapes are grown. The Dönnhoff Estate produces a range of white wines, mainly Riesling, which are recognized for their finesse, complexity, and perfect balance between acidity and sweetness. The estate's wines have received numerous awards and distinctions over the years, affirming the estate's stature on both the German and international wine stage. Furthermore, the estate offers its visitors a truly unique winery experience. Visitors can taste a selection of wines in the traditional tasting room while admiring a breathtaking view over the vineyards.

Discovering the wine region of Nahe

Nahe is one of the smaller German wine regions, named after the Nahe river which joins the Rhein at Rheinhessen/bingen">Bingen. The viticultural carea here is characterised by dramatic topography with steep slopes and craggy outcrops of metamorphic rock. Like most of the regions on or near the Rhine, its most prestigious wines are made from Riesling. There are around 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres) of Vineyards, spread across seven Grosslagen (wine districts) and over 300 Einzellagen (individual vineyard sites).

The total vineyard area has declined – like the Mosel there are many steep vineyard sites here, and while they can produce great quality, the effort required to Farm them has led to many being abandoned. The subregion of Alsenztal, once covered in vineyards, has now almost ceased to exist. The wider region can be divided into three main sections. From Sobernheim to Bad Kreuznach the Nahe river flows west to east and is known as the Upper Nahe.

Steeper slopes of volcanic or weathered stone or reddish slate with clay and an ideal southern exposure give more Finesse, minerality and spiciness to fine Riesling. The area is also known for its gemstones. The most concentrated area of top vineyards in the Nahe runs from Schlossböckelheim to Traisen, with Monzingen – around 6 miles (10km) further to the west being the most acclaimed site further upstream. Climate and Geography The undulating topography here creates multiple diverse mesoclimates for viticulture.
