Castilla-La Mancha is a large region located South and east of the Spanish capital, Madrid. Inexpensive table wines are produced from a variety of Grapes. Higher quality wines are increasingly available, but the region is traditionally known as a source of low quality bulk wine. More than half of Spain's grapes are grown here.
Traditionally, only grape varieties that can tolerate hot, Dry conditions were planted. The white Airen grape is at the top of the list and remains the most planted grape in Castilla-La Mancha (and indeed in all of Spain). However, it is not a particularly respected variety, so many producers have expanded their portfolios. Red grapes dominate the rest of the range.
Originally from Bordeaux, Sauvignon, or Sauvignon Blanc, is reputed to be one of the best French grape varieties for white wine. It is a white grape variety, not to be confused with Sauvignon Gris and its pale yellow color, or with Cabernet Sauvignon which produces red wines. Particularly famous thanks to Sancerre, Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated as far as New Zealand, where it produces great wines whose reputation is well established.
white wines from the region of Castille go well with generally quite well with dishes of pork, rich fish (salmon, tuna etc) or vegetarian such as recipes of brussels sprouts with bacon in a casserole, fresh tuna with sesame seeds or light tuna-tomato quiche (without cream).
On the nose in the region of Castille often reveals types of flavors of tree fruit, oak or earth and sometimes also flavors of citrus fruit, non oak or vegetal. In the mouth in the region of Castille is a with a nice freshness.
