Discovering the wine region of Sardaigne

Sardinia, located 240 km off the west coast of mainland Italy, is the second largest island in the Mediterranean. With an area of about 9,300 square miles, it is almost three times the Size of Corsica, its immediate neighbor to the North, and only slightly smaller than the other major Italian island, Sicily. The island, called Sardegna by its Italian-speaking inhabitants, has belonged to various empires and kingdoms over the centuries. This is reflected in its place names, architecture, languages and dialects, and its unique portfolio of wine grapes.

Since the mid-18th century, Sardinia has been one of Italy's five autonomous regions (the others being Sicily, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Valle d'Aosta), but its separation from the mainland has given rise to a culture and identity somewhat removed from the Italian mainstream. This is reflected in Sardinia's relationship with wine. Wine is much less culturally and historically rooted here than in mainland regions, and large-scale wine production and consumption have only developed in recent centuries. The portfolio of varieties planted in Sardinian vineyards bears little resemblance to that of other Italian wine regions.

On the flat, however, it was much worse – here he lost 90%. Like almost everybody else, he had to raise alcohol levels – here by adding concentrated must – to achieve 12% alcohol. The last time they had to do this was in 2008. Scroll down to see tasting notes and scores for top-scoring Cornas & St-Péray 2021 wines See all 400 Rhône 2021 tasting ...

Hugh Johnson: ‘Veteran wine books are by modern standards short on facts’

When you have an idea that, in your first flush of inspiration, you think deserves to get beyond the breakfast table, you run straight into the modern dilemma. Is it a Tweet? Is it one for Facebook or Instagram? Should you just try it out on your nearest and dearest, or is there a book in it? A slim volume, or does it need several tomes to expound its profundity? My trade being what it is, and royalties being as modest as they are these days, I’ve rather given up on books. Writing new ones, that ...

Rare Domaine Ponsot wine auction tops £1m in sales – Christie’s

Christie’s said the Geneva-based sale, which included more than 400 bottles of Domaine Ponsot wines split into 261 lots, achieved a total of around CHF1.345m (almost £1.2m). All lots found buyers in the auction, held to mark Domaine Ponsot’s 150th anniversary, Christie’s said. Its results again highlight top Burgundy’s allure. The appeal of wines sourced direct from the Domaine may also have inspired strong bidding. Prior to the sale, Edwin Vos, head of Christie’s’ international wine ...
