Discovering the wine region of Abruzzo

Abruzzo is an Italian wine region located on the eastern (Adriatic) coast. Its immediate neighbors in CentralItaly are Marche to the North, Lazio to the west and southwest and Molise to the southeast. Abruzzo has one DOCG - Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane - and three DOC wine appellations. The reds and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, as well as the white wine appellation Trebbiano d'Abruzzo are the most notable, followed by the lesser-known Controguerra.

The region's star varieties are the native red Montepulciano and white Trebbiano. The supporting cast is made up of a few international varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and indigenous varieties such as Sangiovese, Passerina, Pecorino and Cococciola. It should not be confused with prosecco lungo - although there is a family link - and prosecco nostrano, which is none other than Tuscany's malvasia. Note that Vitouska - another Italian grape variety - is the result of a natural intraspecific cross between Tuscan malvasia and Prosecco. Under the name of Glera, it is registered in the Official Catalogue of wine grape varieties list A.
