The wine region of Sonoita
First and largest AVA in Arizona in the grassy high plateaus of the south (1,370-1,580 m), surrounded by four mountain ranges, red sandy-gravelly soils rich in limestone. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Mourvèdre are the signature reds: dense and mineral with concentrated dark fruit, garrigue, pepper and an earthy touch, firm tannins — rustic and complex style. Bold Petite Sirah and Aglianico. Chardonnay and Viognier among the whites.
The wine region of Arizona
Emerging US Southwest state, high-altitude vineyards (1,370-1,580 m) on volcanic soils. Rhone and Mediterranean grapes are the stars: signature Syrah (blackberry, pepper, olive, violet, round tannins), fruity Grenache, dense sun-drenched Mourvedre. Also spicy Tempranillo and fruity Sangiovese. Aromatic Viognier (apricot, flowers) and deeply coloured Petite Sirah in whites.
