The wine region of Lime Kiln Valley

AVA (1982, 2,300 acres) within the Cienega Valley AVA, San Benito County, Central California. Signature old-vine Mourvèdre with a unique US genetic lineage traced to a 1922 cutting from southern France: deep colour, nose of spice, garrigue and dark fruits. Limestone-dolomite bedrock under sandy-gravelly loam. Extreme diurnal range (up to 50°F).

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Ample

Said of a generous wine with a rich body that gives an impression of fullness in the mouth.
