Vast wine region of northwest China (Turpan, Yili Valley), dry continental climate with cool nights, 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, glacier irrigation. Cabernet Sauvignon reigns: full-bodied and sun-ripened with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cedar, gentle spices and a mineral touch, ripe tannins. Supple Merlot, spiced Syrah and Marselan for modern reds. Ample Chardonnay, taut Riesling and Rkatsiteli for whites.
