Discover the grape variety: Saint-Pierre doré

Belonging to the Estaing wines, the Saint Pierre doré is also called Roussellou. With an average budding, this variety is presented in the form of full, winged, elongated and very large bunches, with pulpy, spherical and medium-sized berries. When ripe, the fruit is golden-white in colour, with bronze leaves, which may be three-lobed or whole. The red colour is also found on the internodes of its herbaceous branch. For best results, a fairly long pruning will suit the Saint Pierre Doré, which is not overly afraid of oidium or mildew, but more afraid of grey rot. The characteristics of the roussellou mean that it could play a major role in the production of sparkling wines. The vine does indeed give a very acidic taste, not very sweet and with low degree aromas. It has been noted that the extent of the vineyard recorded in 1958 is 123 Ha, to be reduced to 1 Ha in 1994 on the French territory.

Discover the grape variety: Trepat

A very old grape variety found mainly in Catalonia (Spain), in the regions of Conca de Barbera and Costers del Segre, and also in the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Valencia, etc. It is said to be related to the white heben and has no link with the white trepat of Priorat. Before the phylloxera crisis, it could be found in Languedoc and Roussillon, which is no longer the case today, but it could be interesting for producing excellent and original rosé wines.

Walls: Discovering St-Joseph estate Martine & Christian Rouchier

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking up at some terraced vineyards in St-Joseph with an Australian friend. He remarked that he’d never seen a steep vineyard like this in his home country. Who could afford to rip out the trees, build the access roads, construct the terraces, and plant the vines, without being certain beforehand that the resulting wine could be sold at prices high enough to recoup the investment? It might not be the most romantic way of looking at it. But that’s the modern reality ...

Walls: Celebrating 50 years of Gigondas

When I have some time to myself in the southern Rhône, my favourite place to relax is the peaceful village of Gigondas. I had even more reason to visit this June, as the growers’ syndicate was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the appellation. Over a meal at Domaine du Clos des Tourelles, we had the opportunity to taste wines spanning five decades, including a remarkable 1971 that was still very much alive and kicking. Gigondas has long been recognised as an exceptional site for winemaking, bu ...
