Perdriel is a small sub-region (20 kilometers 13 miles) South of the Argentine city of Mendoza at the foot of the Andes Mountains. It is home to some of Mendoza's Oldest vineyards, majoring on the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. Vineyards surround the small town of Perdriel on the southern banks of the Mendoza River. The sub-region is located within the Lujan de Cuyo department, and is just north of the well-known Agrelo district. The Lunlunta Hills sit to the east of Perdriel, and the Andes tower above the region in the west.
Perdriel's location in the rain shadow of the Andes means that, as in most of Mendoza, the Climate here is semi-arid, with very low rainfall. Irrigation is used sparingly in the vineyards, and water comes from melted snow in the mountains that is brought down by the river.
As in much of Mendoza, altitude is one of the most important factors in the style of wine made here. Vineyards in Perdriel sit at around 950m (3100ft) above sea level, and this high altitude means that the vineyards are subject to intense sunlight during the day.
