Discovering the wine region of Perdriel

Perdriel is a small sub-region (20 kilometers 13 miles) South of the Argentine city of Mendoza at the foot of the Andes Mountains. It is home to some of Mendoza's Oldest vineyards, majoring on the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. Within the context of typically Full-bodied Mendoza red wines, the Malbecs from Perdriel often show comparitive subtlety and refinement and a hallmark Aroma of violets. Like Las Compuertas on the river's Northern bank, Perdriel has a mixture of New plantings and some vineyards with very old vines on their original rootstocks.

Along with the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wines, some Rich, fruit-driven white wines are made in the region from Chardonnay and Semillon. Vineyards surround the small town of Perdriel on the southern banks of the Mendoza River. The sub-region is located within the Lujan de Cuyo department, and is just north of the well-known Agrelo district. The Lunlunta Hills sit to the east of Perdriel, and the Andes tower above the region in the west.

Perdriel's location in the rain shadow of the Andes means that, as in most of Mendoza, the Climate here is semi-arid, with very low rainfall. Irrigation is used sparingly in the vineyards, and water comes from melted snow in the mountains that is brought down by the river. As in much of Mendoza, altitude is one of the most important factors in the style of wine made here. Vineyards in Perdriel sit at around 950m (3100ft) above sea level, and this high altitude means that the vineyards are subject to intense sunlight during the day.
