The Springfield Estate is a superb vineyard located in the Robertson region of South Africa. It is not only a magnificent tourist site, but also a producer of some of the most sought-after South African wines. Established by the Bruwer family, whose origins go back to a centuries-old lineage of winemakers, the Springfield Estate sits on the banks of the Breede River, surrounded by stunning mountains. With vineyards stretching over more than 140 hectares, the estate is recognized for its commitment to natural and traditional winemaking methods. Unlike many other estates in the region, Springfield Estate does not depend on artificial irrigation, but prefers to rely on Mother Nature's blessings for the well-being of its vines. One of the unique attributes of Springfield Estate is its belief in "terroir-driven winemaking". Rather than trying to adapt nature to their needs, they adapt their winemaking practices to the whims of nature. Thus, their wines manage to encapsulate the essence of the Robertson region's terroir like no other. The estate produces a varied range of wines, some of which are among the most prized in South Africa. Their Sauvignon Blanc, made from hand-picked grapes, is famous for its tart acidity and freshness. The estate's Chardonnay, aged in oak barrels, is a grand delight with its creamy notes and flavors of toasted butter. However, the crown jewel of the Springfield Estate may be their signature red wine, "The Work of Time", a classic Bordeaux blend aged for two years in oak barrels.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot gris

Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot gris was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. Pinot Gris is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot Gris wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot gris is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.
