This variety is the result of an intraspecific cross between Pinot Noir and Pirovano 1 (Chasselas rose x Hamburg Muscat), obtained in 1939 by Heinrich Birk at the Geinsenheim Research Station (Germany). Cava is Spain's signature style of Sparkling wine, and the Iberian Peninsula's answer to Champagne.
