The Château Pape Clément is a vineyard estate located in Pessac-Léognan near Bordeaux, France. It has been supplying exceptional wines for almost 800 years and is part of the wide network of grand cru produced in Bordeaux. Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the region. The history of this place dates back to the 12th century when Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux, bought a small manor in the area. In 1252, Bertrand began producing wine and named the estate "Gothicum", which later became Château Pape Clément. The name derives from his status as "pope" as well as his name, Bertrand de Goth. A Pessac-Léognan appellation was created in 1987 for the Sauternes and Graves, and in 2006 the estate gained the Grand Cru Classé classification for its white wines. Over the years, the vineyard has experienced slow and steady growth and has established itself as one of the most famous in the region. Château Pape Clément is composed of 66 hectares of vineyards, with 24 hectares dedicated to the production of red wines and 42 hectares to the production of white wines. The vines are planted with a blend of classic Bordeaux varietals, such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc for the red wines, and sauvignon blanc and sémillon for the white wines. The wines are traditionally aged in wooden vats and oak barrels, and their varietals are blended to produce wines of exceptional power and complexity. The wines of Château Pape Clément are deep, complex and aromatic. The red wines possess a varied and subtle aromatic complexity, with notes of olives, ripe fruits, and plums, and firm but soft tannins. The white wines have aromas of citrus, flowers and exotic fruits, as well as an airy mineral structure.
