Historic commune of the Mittelhaardt in the German Pfalz, home to prestigious Lagen including the Michelsberg (VDP Grosse Lage, calcareous marls) and the Spielberg (VDP Erste Lage, red sandstone). Riesling is the signature white: taut and mineral with white peach, red apple, blackcurrant, ripe citrus and a tropical hint, chiselled length — Michelsberg broad and fruity, Spielberg muscular and structured. They are in fact tartaric salts formed by tartaric acid, potassium and calcium naturally present in the wine. This deposit does not alter the quality of the wine and can be eliminated by a simple decanting.
