The Eblin Fuchs wine estate is nestled in the heart of the picturesque region of Alsace, in northeastern France. This family-owned estate, specifically located in Zellenberg, an ancient wine-growing village overlooking the Alsace plain, is known for its top-notch wine and environmentally friendly winemaking methods. Established several generations ago by the Eblin and Fuchs families, this estate has withstood the test of time while maintaining an impeccable quality of their wines. The family's passion and dedication to viticulture have given birth to a range of wines that truly express the terroir and diversity of this corner of Alsace. The estate consists of about 10 hectares of vineyards, shared between various grape varieties, mainly Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir. The vines are grown using organic farming methods, evidencing the estate's deep commitment towards respect for nature and the authenticity of the product. The vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and exceptional terroir due to the heavy soil composed of clay and limestone, which gives wines with complex, intense aromas and a long lifespan. The attention paid to each step of the winemaking process, from the vine to the bottle, is characteristic of the Eblin Fuchs estate. The harvest is done by hand to preserve the integrity of the fruit and fermentations are carried out in a natural way. The Domaine Eblin Fuchs produces a variety of white, red and rosé wines, as well as outstanding wines such as the Late Harvest and Selections of Noble Grains, which reflect the terroir and expertise of this family estate.

Discovering the wine region of Alsace

Alsace, located in the extreme north-east of France, is Distinguished from other French wine regions by its strong Franco-Germanic influences. These influences are the result of a back-and-forth between the German and French sovereignties over the last few centuries. They can be seen not only in the architecture and culture of Alsace, but also in the wines. Alsace wines are produced under three main appellations: Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru for still white wines (Sweet and Dry), and Crémant d'Alsace for Sparkling wines.

Almost all the wines produced in this region fall under one of these three appellations. Alsace Grand Cru wines are produced from one of the 51 privileged vineyards spread along the Length of the region. Alsace is the only French wine region to produce significant quantities of Riesling and Gewurztraminer. These two grape varieties are more commonly associated with German wines and are reminiscent of Alsace's history.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot gris

Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot gris was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. Pinot Gris is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot Gris wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot gris is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.

The word of the wine: Phenolic ripeness

A distinction is made between the ripeness of sugars and acids and the ripeness of tannins and other compounds such as anthocyanins and tannins, which will bring structure and colour. Grapes can be measured at 13° potential without having reached this phenolic maturity. Vinified at this stage, they will give hard, astringent wines, without charm.

Auxerrois is a white grape variety native to Lorraine, which is also found in Alsace and in the Loire Valley, where it took off in 1950. Its name comes from the nurseries in Auxerre where it found refuge during the Second World War. Often called Pinot Auxerrois, it is part of the Moselle, Alsace and Côtes-de-Toul AOC grape varieties. Auxerrois should not be confused with côt or malbec, which are red grape varieties from the Cahors region and which may bear the same name. The bunches of Auxerrois are of medium size with small berries. It is a semi-late grape variety whose buds only come out when temperatures are well above 10°C. Auxerrois wines are characterized by finesse and acidity and subtle aromas of exotic fruits, fruits and white flowers. In France, it represents 1,600 hectares of production and some small parcels of Auxerrois are also present in Luxembourg, Germany, Canada and South Africa (2,300 hectares in total).
