A very old grape variety, probably already known to the Romans, and most certainly of Italian origin, from Friuli to be precise. The Hungarian Keknyelu is said to be the same variety, but this remains to be confirmed. The wine region of Ahr
Ahr is one of Germany’s least-known and Northernmost wine regions, known for its Pinot Noir reds. It Lies immediately north of the Mosel, and follows the Ahr River in the Final stages of its journey towards its confluence with the Rhein. One might expect a wine region this far north (50°N) to specialize in white wines – like almost every other cool-Climate wine region. After all, neighboring Mosel and Mittelrhein both clearly favor white wines (around 85 percent).
The word of the wine: Côte des Bar
This is the name given to the vineyards of the Aube, which are closer to Burgundy, and some of the wines produced here bear witness to this proximity. The pinot noir dominates, the meunier is practically absent. Two crus have become references: Riceys, where a rosé without bubbles is also produced, and Montgueux near Troyes, renowned for its Chardonnay.
