Interspecific cross between the Clinton and the frankenthal or black-hamburg obtained in 1859 by Charles Arnold of Paris in Canada (Brant County in Ontario). In France, it is one of the six hybrids prohibited since 1935 (included in the European regulations): the Clinton, the Herbemont, the Isabelle, the Jacquez, the Noah and the Othello. It has been used as a sire in several crosses, notably by Couderc and Seibel. Today, the Othello has practically disappeared.

The wine region of Coteaux de Peyriac is located in the region of Pays d'Oc of Vin de Pays of France. Grenache is a black grape variety that originated in Spain and is one of the great quality varieties of southern France. Sometimes vinified on its own, it is most often blended with one or more other Rhone or southern grape varieties with complementary qualities such as Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan or Cinsault. Its wines are warm, with aromas of red fruits (cherry) and spices; they oxidize with time. Vinified alone or in very large proportions, Grenache Noir also makes great natural sweet wines in Roussillon (Rivesaltes, Banyuls, Maury) and in the Rhône Valley (Rasteau).
