A very old grape variety whose origin is still uncertain, it is thought to have come from Greece, and for others its origin is Bulgarian from the Thrace plain where it is still widely cultivated. It can be found in Romania, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, etc. Little known in France, it is nevertheless registered in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1.

Bulgaria, while far from the most famous or prestigious of the world's wine-producing nations, certainly ranks among the most prolific. This Eastern European country has a Long history of viticulture, and its wine has more to offer than the sea of cheap reds (mostly Cabernet Grape/sauvignon">Sauvignon) that flowed westward in the 1980s would suggest. The country now has a growing number of promising wine pioneers, but perhaps the most remarkable era of Bulgarian viticulture dates back to the mid-14th century, just before the once-mighty Bulgarian Empire began to fragment and cede Power to the Ottomans. Jackson Family Wines buys first vineyard in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley

Bordeaux agrees funding to pull up vineyards
Bordeaux’s wine bureau, the CIVB, confirmed a financing deal has been agreed with the government to help winemakers pull up thousands of hectares of vineyards, as announced at the Salon d’Agriculture show in Paris. ‘These tools put us in a position to pull out 9,500 hectares of vines in [the department of] Gironde,’ the CIVB said.
