Discovering the wine region of Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina is a state in the far South of Brazil. Quality wine production is still in its early stages, but is likely to develop rapidly as the industry develops country wide. To date, Santa Catarina's production is a mix of red, white and Sparkling wines. It Lies immediately North of the country's southernmost state (and most prolific wine region), Rio Grande do Sul.

Located between the latitudes of 26°S and 29°S, Santa Catarina is far from the most obvious of locations for winegrowing. It lies entirely outside the 'wine belt' (the band of latitudes in which effective viniculture is traditionally thought possible). In the southern hemisphere, the wine belt encircles the globe between 30°S and 45°S. It is on the high-lying plateau, the Planalto Catarinense, that almost all of Santa Catarina's vineyards are located.

The main wine-producing zones are in the central-southern portion of the state, around the towns of Sao Joaquim, Campos Novos and Cacador. Altitude plays a key role in the Terroir here, particularly in keeping temperatures down. The plateau ranges between 915m and 1400m (3000ft and 4600ft). Basalt soils feature strongly in some parts of the planalto and are credited with bringing complexity to the wines.

Concern that wine prices may rise amid cost pressures

Inflation and higher costs have led to questions in the UK and US in recent weeks about how much the trade can absorb before wine prices increase. Despite a recent freeze on duty tax, the UK Wine & Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has said it is concerned wine prices may rise in 2022 due to myriad factors, including higher costs, inflation and supply chain issues. The trade body sent a letter to government signed by 49 UK wine and spirits businesses last month, warning that ‘rising cost ...

Walls: Tavel and its unexpected revolution

When asked which is the most exciting appellation in the Rhône, there’s one that currently springs to mind before all others: Tavel. I have to be honest with you: I don’t buy much rosé. So, given that Tavel is, according to The Oxford Companion to Wine, ‘one of France’s few all-rosé appellations,’ my response might be unexpected. The Oxford Companion is technically correct, of course – the wines made here are paler than a typical red wine. But compared to other rosés, that’s where the comparison ...

EPI purchases Super Tuscan producer Isole e Olena

The De Marchi family established the 56ha estate back in 1956, and it is now firmly established as one of the region’s leading producers. A Piedmont lawyer called Francesco De Marchi founded the business, but his visionary son – Paulo De Marchi – has driven its rise to prominence. He is r ...
