Discovering the wine region of Latium

Lazio is a region in CentralItaly, where the ancient capital of Rome is located. The region's reputation is based primarily on its white wines, the main varieties of which are Trebbiano, Malvasia di Candia and Malvasia Puntinata. Traditionally, these wines were fat, Round, abboccato and intended for immediate consumption. Today, the styles are lighter, drier and crisper thanks to modern winemaking methods.

However, they are still meant to be drunk Young, characterized by their crispness, high Acidity and a lightness that makes them an ideal accompaniment to local cuisine. They cut through the heaviness of such dishes as porchetta (Roast pork with herbs) and abbacchio (young lamb). Although its red wines are not as famous, they are beginning to make a name for themselves. These include wines made from Sangiovese, Cesanese, Montepulciano, Merlot and Nero Buono di Coro.

Discover the grape variety: Sangiovese

Originally from Italy, it is the famous Sangiovese of Tuscany producing the famous wines of Brunello de Montalcino and Chianti. This variety is registered in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1. According to recent genetic analysis, it is the result of a natural cross between the almost unknown Calabrese di Montenuovo (mother) and Ciliegiolo (father).

A groundbreaking Dram

Ardbeg single malt whisky, based on the southern shores of Scotland’s island of Islay, has recently unveiled Fon Fhòid: the latest in a number of highly unusual experiments. Back in 2014, the distillery team lead by whisky creator, Dr Bill Lumsden and former distillery manager, Mickey Heads (now retired) took the highly unusual approach of burying two already matured casks of Ardbeg underneath the peat bogs themselves, (burning peat smoke is normally used to dry the malted barley during producti ...

Napa Valley Grapegrowers to receive climate change funding

While vineyards are managed one vintage at a time, farming practices take a longer view. A survey of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers members found that, on average, about 90% wanted more education and resources for water conservation, climate resilience and climate-smart farming opportunities. This grant will go a long way to help provide those resources. ‘Farmers are by nature risk averse,’ said Molly Williams of Napa Valley Grapegrowers. ‘Climate change poses considerable risks.
