Located in the famous wine region of Bordeaux, France, the Château Penin winery is a wonder for lovers of good wine. This historic estate is a true postcard of the French countryside with its peaceful vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, its charming old stones, and its delicious range of wines. Château Penin is a family-run estate covering about 40 hectares of vineyards. From the beginning, the Carteyron family has been dedicated to the cultivation of the vine and the production of exceptionally high-quality wines, respecting both nature and viticultural traditions. The grape varieties used are typical of the Bordeaux designation, with a majority of Merlot, supplemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The beauty of Château Penin lies first in its terroir. The vines are planted on soils ranging from round gravels to clay, allowing for a diversity of wines produced. Modern growing techniques combined with traditional expertise make it possible to make the most of each plot and each vintage. The Château Penin cellar is a blend of tradition and modernity. Stainless steel tanks rub shoulders with more traditional French oak barrels, allowing for the extraction of all the distinctive aromas and flavors of the grapes. A visit to the cellar offers a fascinating insight into the winemaking process. The Château Penin winery is renowned for producing fruity, gourmet, and accessible wines, representative of the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. They are recognized for their silky finish, their aromatic palette, and their ability to age well. The Château also produces an excellent clairet, a full-bodied rosé wine, and a dry white, both highly appreciated.

Discovering the wine region of Bordeaux

Bordeaux, in southwestern France, is one of the most famous, prestigious and prolific wine regions in the world. The majority of Bordeaux wines (nearly 90% of the production Volume) are the Dry, medium and Full-bodied red Bordeaux blends for which it is famous. The finest (and most expensive) are the wines of the great châteaux of Haut-Médoc and the right bank appellations of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The former focuses (at the highest level) on Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter on Merlot.

The legendary reds are complemented by high-quality white wines made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. These range from dry whites that challenge the best of Burgundy (Pessac-Léognan is particularly renowned) to the Sweet, botrytised nectars of Sauternes. Although Bordeaux is most famous for its wines produced in specific districts or communes, many of its wines fall under other, broader appellations. These include AOC Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur and Crémant de Bordeaux.

The Bordeaux Red appellation represents more than a third of the total production. The official Bordeaux wine region extends 130 kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast. 111,000 hectares of vineyards were registered in 2018, a figure that has remained largely constant over the previous decade. However, the number of winegrowers has consolidated; in 2018 there were around 6,000, compared to 9,000 a decade earlier.

The word of the wine: Extraction

All the methods (pumping over, punching down) that allow the colour and tannins to be extracted from the grape skin during maceration, before fermentation begins. It is also possible to macerate after fermentation, but gently, so as not to extract the tannins from the seeds, which are greener. Because of its solvent power, alcohol favours extraction.
