Discovering the wine region of Crémant de Bordeaux

Crémant de Bordeaux is the regional appellation for traditional method white and rosé Sparkling wines from the Bordeaux wine region in southwest France. Sparkling wine production in Bordeaux is far from prolific and has slowly declined in response to the obvious success of still wines in the region. Sparkling wines have been produced in Bordeaux for more than 100 years, but the appellation was not formalized until April 1990. Even today, the specific style of Crémant de Bordeaux wines is not as Clear as that of other French Crémant appellations, such as Crémant de Loire, Crémant de Bourgogne and Crémant d'Alsace.

This is probably due to the fact that these wines have such a marginal presence in the sea of Dry red wines for which Bordeaux is famous. More than 500 parishes are covered by the Crémant de Bordeaux appellation, making it one of the largest in France in terms of geographical area. However, only 100 hectares of vineyards are currently dedicated to the production of these wines. The classic Bordeaux Grape varieties predominate, with sparkling wines being made from the same grape varieties as the still wines.

Stephen Brook: ‘It is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the Bordeaux region’

My book The Complete Bordeaux, which has been revised every five years, is soon to be published in its fourth edition. This may seem like excessive haste, given the scope of the book, but it is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the region. Burgundy, in contrast, is relatively stable, since most properties are family-owned and tend to stay that way. But not so in Bordeaux, where there are ample opportunities for newcomers to acquire established properties, as they have been doing ...

My life and job as a personal wine consultant

Tongue firmly in cheek, I sometimes define ‘wine consultant’ as ‘someone lacking employment who will work for whoever pays them’. Although meant in jest, the implied question is valid: just what does a wine consultant do? More importantly, in this age, when every assistant in a retail shop styles him- or herself a sales consultant, who would hire one? The short answer is this: a wine consultant is someone who advises wine lovers about their passion. He or she advises buyers on what to buy (and a ...

Andrew Jefford: ‘Telling stories about terroir will lead us astray’

A domaine’s long history hoists its inanimate wines into life; biography brings meaning to the simple sensual pleasure of tasting a grower’s efforts. It’s important, though, to know what we are doing when we tell stories. And to know what to tell them about. Winemakers take the messy chaos of natural processes and add discipline, giving shape and direction to produce a stable and enticing wine. This was never nature’s intent. The storyteller takes a messy chaos of random events, either imagined ...
