The Elios Estate, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Sicilian cove in Italy, is a true destination for wine connoisseurs. Bathed in the mild Mediterranean climate, this lush vineyard spreads over vast slopes that caress the sea, an idyllic place for vine-growing. Proud of its Sicilian heritage, the Elios Estate intertwines its history with that of this land, once cleared by the island's first inhabitants, and whose fertile volcanic soils were just waiting to be exploited. Today, the estate is recognized for its exceptional wines, which have lost nothing of the authentic character that sets them apart. Elios's wines carry the flavors and aromas of the Sicilian terroir: notes of ripe fruit, honey, spices, with a hint of minerality reminiscent of the volcanic lands that nourish the vineyards. The estate produces a range of wines as diverse as they are exciting, from the intense, fruity expression of Nero d'Avola to the finesse and elegance of Grillo, and the unusual, refreshing Moscato. Beyond the vineyards, the Elios Estate is known for its commitment to sustainable development. By using environmentally-friendly farming methods, the estate aims to preserve the biodiversity of the terroir and minimize its carbon footprint, while producing high-quality wines. The Elios Estate also offers visitors the opportunity to discover its behind-the-scenes during guided tours. It's an incomparable chance to walk among rows of vines, visit the cellars where the wine quietly ages in barrels, and of course, taste the wines in the splendid setting of the estate.

Discovering the wine region of Sicily

Sicily is the Southernmost region of Italy, and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For over 2500 years, Sicily (Sicilia in Italian) has been an important centre of Mediterranean viticulture, although the reputation and style of its wines have changed considerably over time. The island was once best known for its Sweet muscatels (see Pantelleria), and later for its fortified Marsala. Today, many of its best-known wines are Dry table wines produced under the regional designation IGT Terre Siciliane, or Sicilia DOC (see below).

At its widest point, Sicily measures 280 kilometers (175 miles) from east to west, and about a third of that distance from North to south. Its roughly triangular shape earned the island the nickname Trinacria (the triangle) in the Middle Ages and is reflected in the triskelion (a three-pronged pattern) at the Center of the regional flag. With constant sunshine and moderate rainfall, Sicily's classic Mediterranean Climate is ideally suited to wine Grape production. The Warm, dry climate means that mould and rot are kept to a minimum, especially in well-ventilated areas that benefit from coastal breezes.

Discover the grape variety: Nero d'Avola

Most certainly of Italian origin, more precisely from Sicily where it is very well known. It should be noted that a certain number of Italian grape varieties bear the synonym or name "calabrese", whether or not followed by an epithet, and care should be taken not to confuse them. Calabrese is also known in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria and Malta. In France, it is virtually absent from the vineyard, although it is listed in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1.

Discover the grape variety: Grillo

A very ancient grape variety still grown today in western Sicily. Very often associated with catarratto and inzolia, it produces the famous Marsala liqueur wine. It is also increasingly being vinified as a single variety and produces excellent dry wines full of freshness and fruitiness. Grillo is believed to be the result of an intra-fertile cross between catarratto and Muscat of Alexandria or zibibbo, obtained in 1869 by Antonino Mendola. It is represented by two biotypes that can be easily recognized, but it seems that winegrowers attach little importance to them. Little known in other Italian regions - in Liguria it is known as "rossese bianco" - it can also be found in Australia and South Africa. It is not widely grown in France, although it is interesting because of its ability to withstand hot climates and drought, and to ripen quite late.
