The wine region of Copertino
DOC of Salento (southern Apulia, 1976) on clay and iron-rich terra rossa soils over calcareous tuff, hot Mediterranean climate. Negroamaro is the signature red (>=70%): deep and full-bodied with notes of plum, black cherry, blackberry, tobacco, tar, and blood orange peel, firm tannins and fine acidity — ferrous mineral note from the soils. Malvasia Nera (up to 30%) adds roundness and floral notes. Riserva after 2 years of aging.
The wine region of Puglia
Heel of the boot, 80% red vineyard, sunny and generous. Fleshy, jammy Primitivo (= Zinfandel) with notes of black cherry, plum, chocolate and spices, powerful alcohol and melted tannins, a star in Primitivo di Manduria. Deep, structured Negroamaro (black-bitter) with a bitter finish in Salice Salentino. Structured Nero di Troia, spicy Susumaniello.
