Discovering the wine region of Escherndorf

Escherndorf is a winegrowing Village to the west of Franken/volkach">Volkach in Franken, Germany. Winemaking and viticulture has existed in the area for more than 1000 years. The village comprises two key concave-shaped Vineyards: Fürtsenberg and Lump. Escherndorfer Lump, located to the northeast of the village, is the top site due to its predominantly south-facing exposures.

Silvaner and Riesling vines are planted on clay and limestone slopes, some of which extend down into local properties. A unique microclimate for viticulture is created in Escherndorf by steep hillsides that follow the arc of the Main river below. This natural amphitheater provides optimal grape-growing conditions, as it protects the vines from the cold northerly and easterly winds while also acting as a suntrap. Escherndorf Am Lumpen 1655 forms a small section of the larger Lump vineyard and is classified as Grosse Lage by the VDP.

This vineyard also produces several expressions of Grosses Gewächs wines.
