The wine region of Escherndorf
Franconian village on a bend of the Main, renowned for the Lump (VDP Grosse Lage, 25 ha), a concave south-facing amphitheatre on Muschelkalk (Triassic shell limestone). Silvaner is the signature white — dry and mineral with intense pear, citrus, green apple, herbs and a stony-saline edge, superb finesse and ageing. Taut Riesling complements. Home of Horst and Rainer Sauer estates.
The wine region of Franken
Homeland of German Silvaner: dry, straight, mineral and lively whites with notes of green apple, citrus, fresh herbs and a saline touch, planted here for over 350 years (1,500 ha, a quarter of the vineyard). Also supple, floral Müller-Thurgau, taut Riesling, aromatic Bacchus. Some discreet reds (Spätburgunder). 6,040 ha in Bavaria along the Main around Würzburg, red sandstone and shell-limestone soils.
The word of the wine: Burgundy melon
A white grape variety from Burgundy that is not widely used in its native region, but has spread to the Nantes region. It is the exclusive variety of Muscadet. It gives a dry pale yellow wine, supple and lively, with an intense bouquet, to which maturing on lees gives fatness and aromatic complexity.
