Structured, elegant reds with a deep ruby robe, firm tannins and lively acidity. Intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry, black pepper, spices, violet and balsamic notes. Dense palate, fine ageing potential. Nearly extinct, it was saved in the 1970s by the winemakers of Prepotto and is the signature of Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC and Friuli Colli Orientali Schioppettino di Prepotto DOC. Native Friulian variety; its name evokes the crackling (schioppettino) on the palate.

Tuscan DOC sister to Vino Nobile around Montepulciano (250-600 m), local Sangiovese "Prugnolo Gentile" (min. 70%) with Canaiolo and Mammolo. Fresh and approachable red: vibrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry, violet, plum, white pepper, wild herbs and mineral hint, lively acidity and fine tannins — young version of the great Nobile, short ageing (~4 months). Drink within 2-4 years, food-friendly and pleasurable.

Kingdom of Sangiovese: upright reds with cherry, plum, dried herbs and leather, lively acidity and firm tannins. Fleshy, food-friendly Chianti Classico DOCG, deep long-ageing Brunello di Montalcino (spice, tobacco, ripe black fruit), elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On the coast, Bolgheri crafts the opulent Cabernet- and Merlot-based 'Super Tuscans'. Some fresh white Vernaccia.
